Structural Therapy

Based on the pioneering work of Ida P. Rolf, Structural Therapy was developed as a means to reintegrate the body to realign its structures in the fight against gravity every human being faces.

The work is conducted in a highly targeted ten (10) session format that focuses on the fascia, the connective tissue which gives the body its shape and form. Fascia is the layer of connective tissue that covers and connects muscles, nerves and bones.

Structural Therapy acknowledges that the fascia can overreact or freeze up in response to injury, and that the pull of gravity on the body, stress or even emotional pain essentially traps trauma in the body. Structural Therapy, is hands-on manipulation which, releases, realigns and balances the body through a combination of bodywork and psychophysical re-education (proper movement education), meaning that all the parts of the body then work together without impinging upon each other

Effects and Goals of Structural Therapy

Structural Therapy can potentially be very effective in relieving chronic pain, such as back pain, sciatica, scoliosis, tense or frozen muscles and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Recipients of Structural Therapy learn to shy away from negative movement patterns known to cause physical, and oftentimes emotional, stresses on the body and replace these with positive movements to maintain proper alignment.

Benefits such as better posture, presentation, performance, relief from joint pain, relief from general aches and pains, stabilizing of the body nervous system, and generalized transformational events and circumstances have been reported by recipients.

Some individuals who partake in this type of bodywork find they experience an emotional release during our sessions as well.

Benefits of Structural Therapy

Sports Massage

Originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training, this modality emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

Sports Massage is not just for the sports enthusiast but is also beneficial for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion since occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries.

Sports massage is a modality that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion along with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation to increase overall flexibility through targeted facilitated stretches to alleviate bodily stretch and help prevent injury.
